Gansbaai

Gansbaai is a fishing town and popular tourist destination. It is known for its dense population of great white sharks and as a whale-watching location. Getaway from the hustle and bustle of busy city life and visit the natural unspoiled beauty of Gansbaai with its warm and friendly people. Gansbaai at De Kelders has one of the oldest associations with man at Klipgat Cave where remains have been excavated showing modern man living there more than 70,000 years ago. The cave is part of the Cradle of Human Culture Route that stretches throughout the Western Cape and open to visitors daily. At Dyer Island the mysterious and graceful Great White Sharks have drawn visitors from across the globe, making Gansbaai the Great White Shark capital of South Africa. In the same vicinity, just off Shark Alley, you will find an abundance of seals, being the hot spot for great whites, not to mention the Penguin colony of Dyer Island. Famous for its shark cage diving, Gansbaai offers this unique experience throughout the year. Gansbaai is situated in the centre of many small bays with miles of unspoiled beaches and nature reserves with approximately 1500 species of fynbos, ancient Milkwood forests, rocky inlets, caves and spectacular views across Walker Bay. The village has two harbours where many fishing trawlers and boats come and go daily, supplying fresh catches to fishmongers and local restaurants.
