Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve comprises some 100 000ha of natural vegetation, with more than 1 600 species of unspoilt indigenous fynbos, the Micro frog and the rare marsh rose. It was the first UNESCO-declared Biosphere Reserve in southern Africa. It is called the “heart of the Fynbos Kingdom.
The Kogelberg Nature Reserve makes out the core area of the Biosphere Reserve. This is a low impact area, which allows only 12 persons per hiking trail (6 day hiking trails, 1 overnight trail). Permits are needed for hiking.
