Road gateways to the Cape Whale Coast
Access to the Overstrand area and Cape Whale Coast is via three main tarred roads..
R44: In the West (Cape Town/Somerset West/Strand) the R44 via Gordon’s Bay brings you into Overstrand at Pringle Bay, near Kleinmond.
R43: In the North (N2 and Botriver) the R43 branches off the N2 at the bottom of the Houwhoek Pass and brings you into the Overstrand in the area between Kleinmond and Fisherhaven, near Hermanus.
R326: From the East (Garden Route/N2/Riviersonderend/Caledon) the R326 bring you in at Stanford, and Gansbaai if you turned left at Stanford (turn right for Hermanus).
There are two other gravel road accesses, one from Caledon to Hermanus (Hemel & Aarde Valley) and the other from Agulhas/Bredasdorp to Gansbaai or Stanford. Both these gravel roads will be tarred in the next few years. Unless you have experience traveling on gravel/sand surfaces it is recommended that you choose the tarred roads.
